FAQ

  • Do you offer classes for homeschoolers?
The North Fork Ballet partners with Vision Charter Academy and Colorado Home Enrichment to provide ballet classes to their students free of charge! Contact us if your VCA or CHE student would like to enroll in ballet. Homeschoolers may also schedule private and group lessons during the day to supplement their ballet training. Private and group lessons are $60/hour whether it's 1 or 5 kids.
  • How much do ballet classes cost?
A single drop-in class is $15. To attend regularly, tuition is $50/month, and most students dance 7-9 months out of the year. Here are some other expenses you will encounter: -Dance clothing and shoes for class -Costume rental fee of $10/student -Some students may need to purchase a portion of their costume (usually < $30) -Tickets for performances (usually $8-15) -Makeup, hair nets, or other performance needs Scholarships are available! Learn more about scholarships here.
  • What is required to dance "en pointe"?
Girls must be at least 12 years old, with 3+ years in ballet since age 8. They must also be dancing at level 3 or higher and taking two or more classes a week. A doctor's visit is also recommended to ensure the bone structure of the feet is maturing properly and free from defects. After beginning pointe class, it may be months to a year or more before the dancer is ready to purchase pointe shoes. After passing a physical and written exam, you and your instructor will schedule a fitting to buy pointe shoes.
  • Are there any discounts?
We offer a family and multi-class discount! The first class is full price, and then you will save $10/month for each additional class your family pays for. The discount is good for siblings in the same class, different classes, or one child taking multiple classes.
  • How young can kids start ballet?
Children must be 3 years old in order to begin ballet classes. Even at age 3, some kids are not ready for organized activities. It's normal for kids to just watch, or even cry at the beginning. If you're little one doesn't take to it after a few weeks, give it some time, and try again when they're older.
  • How does the ballet shoe and clothing exchange work?
Kids usually outgrow dance wear before it wears out! Ballet shoe trade: Outgrown ballet shoes may be traded for proper fitting ones if we have your child's size in our collection. If you left the old pair at home, shoes may be borrowed for class, but need to be returned that day. Ballet clothes box: The first week of each month, we will display a "free" box of donated items, and students may take anything that fits. Outgrown tights, leotards, skirts, and warm-up layers may be donated at any time. Please come before or after class to try on shoes and clothes.
  • Who needs to audition?
Auditions are open students interested in a solo or special role. We love to do ballets that tell a story, so the roles you can audition for, and who is eligible for them, changes each semester. Fall 2024 auditions are open to dancers interested in the following roles: Clara - age 7+ Nutcracker - age 9+ Mouse King - age 9+ Dolls - age 11+ Jack-in-the-box - age 11+
  • How many performances are there?
The North Fork Ballet has two performances a year, in December and May. For the 2024-25 season, there will be two showings of "Taste of the Nutcracker" December 6-7. There will be three showings of our spring production Mother's Day weekend.
  • Who gets to be in the show?
Every child and teen who is registered for ballet classes will get a part in the performances. Drop-in students do will not be in the show, and will not be allowed to attend classes a month leading up to the performance. Adults have the option to perform, but can also attend class at any time without the intent to go on stage. If your child will be unable to perform for any reason, please let us know as soon as possible.
  • When is the next audition?
The Fall 2024 audition will take place Wednesday, October 2 from 4:30-5:30, and is open to dancers age 7+. If your child normally has class during that time, the audition will replace class that day. Please dress nicely in ballet attire, with hair in a neat bun. You may arrive 15 minutes early to warm up and get an audition number. Adults are welcome to audition! We would love to include "Parents" in this year's Nutcracker. Roles will be announced the following Monday.
  • When do tickets go on sale?
Tickets usually go on sale 6-8 weeks before the performance. Be sure to buy tickets early, because we usually sell out!
  • Do I need to commit to attend class regularly?
We know adults have busy schedules, so we've designed the Adult Ballet class to be a drop-in class. Come dance with us as frequently as you are able. Of course, you will get better at ballet the more often you attend! Performances are optional for adults. If you would like to perform on stage with us, please try to attend as many classes as you can during the months leading up to the show.
  • Is there an upper age limit for adult classes?
No, seniors of all ages are welcome to join ballet! It's a mixed level class, and you can use modifications to dance at your own level. Let the teacher know if you have any injuries or chronic pain, and we can help you find the right modifications so you can still enjoy ballet. Like any kind of exercise, it's a good idea to ask your doctor if ballet is right for you. I have danced with men and women in their 90s, and while their pirouettes may be slower, I am inspired by their endurance and continued passion for movement!
